why the first two lines decide everything

etsy truncates your description on mobile after a couple of lines with a “read more” link. google pulls roughly the first ~155 characters into the search snippet. and etsy’s own search reads your description text for ranking signals (it weights the title and tags more, but the description still counts).

so your first two lines are doing three jobs at once: hooking a skimming buyer, feeding google a snippet, and confirming to etsy what this listing is. waste them on “thanks for visiting” and you’ve spent your most valuable real estate on nothing.

the fix: lead with the exact product + its single biggest benefit + your top keyword phrase, in plain language a human would actually say.

weak: “Hello and welcome! I’m so glad you found my little shop 🥰”

converts: “Personalized leather keychain — engraved with any name or date, ready to gift in a kraft box. A small, useful keepsake people actually keep.”

see the difference? the second one tells the buyer what it is, why it’s good, and hits “personalized leather keychain” + “engraved” + “gift” in the first breath.

notice what’s happening: “personalized cutting board,” “engraved,” “maple,” “wedding gift,” “housewarming” all appear naturally because that’s genuinely how you’d describe it. no keyword stuffing — the keywords are just the honest words for the product.

the five rules that make it convert

1. benefits over features, every time. “12-inch maple board” is a feature. “a gift they’ll see on the counter for years” is a benefit. list the feature, then immediately translate it into what the buyer gets out of it.

2. kill the objection before it forms. worried it’ll arrive late? you said 3–5 days and offered priority. worried the engraving is cheap? you said “deep enough to survive years of washing.” every block above is quietly answering a doubt.

3. keywords are words, not spam. etsy’s search likes to see your main phrase in the description, but it punishes obvious stuffing and so do buyers. write the sentence a human would say out loud. the keyword shows up on its own.

4. make it scannable. caps mini-headers and bullet lines beat dense paragraphs. people skim before they read. give the skimmers an easy path and the readers the depth.
